About This Experience

Description

An official Tundra Buggy® Adventure is the best and safest way to view the majestic polar bear in its natural environment and is an ideal tour option if you are planning your own travel and accommodations in Churchill. Tundra Buggy Day Tours include expert interpretation in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area about the wildlife and the magnificent ecosystems surrounding the subarctic environment of Churchill. You will have the opportunity to explore the open tundra while your driver discusses the effects of tides, currents and ice formation on the polar bear. Wildlife you spot may include polar bears, arctic hare, arctic and red fox, gyrfalcon, ptarmigan and much more. Please note that Tundra Buggy Day Tours take place on a 40-passenger Tundra Buggy® and during peak seasons have a tendency to sell to capacity. We highly recommend booking your Tundra Buggy Day Tour(s) as early as possible.

Summer tundra buggy trip

A good trip to get a feel of the tundra landscape. Our driver guide was excellent, full of knowledgeable facts and anecdotes. Lots of birds seen with stops to photograph and look out for tundra fauna. Sadly no mammals on our trip. Buggies are comfortable with good internal and external vision. Outside platform high and Barrie’s surround it. Toilet on board. Lunch was excellent- soup, sandwich, cookie and coffee. Vegetarian wrap prebooked. Great trip to an area you couldn’t access alone.

A Bucket List Win!

We had the most incredible day ever! We were very fortunate to have perfect weather and got to see many polar bears doing everything from sleeping, wandering, and even sparing. We even got to see a mother polar bear with her cub so we were able to check off all of our “hope to see” boxes! The landscape itself is worth the trip so the animals we saw were truly a giant bonus. The tundra buggies themselves are comfortable, and between the number of windows and the viewing dock everyone was able to see everything and get great photos. Our driver, Jim, was informative and entertaining. You can tell that he truly loves his job, the bears and Churchill itself. The lunch served on the buggy was a delightful surprise. The sandwiches and soup were absolutely delicious and were incredibly filling. All in all, this day trip is one of the best trips we’ve ever done and we highly recommend this company.

Bear-watching during a pandemic

At the end of October 2020, I did Frontiers North's one day fly-in-fly-out Polar Bear Adventure to Churchill, Manitoba. Why would one get on an airplane and travel during a pandemic? A few good reasons actually, the reduced-capacity flight is direct from my city; and Frontiers North has maintained a good track record of covid-preparedness and enforcement. One measure was to cut client number in half, which allowed for all buggy passengers to have great seating. The Tundra Buggy covers and backtracks over an area of trails for several hours, giving one a chance to experience the stark northern landscape and its climate. Our driver, Luke, was knowledgable, accommodating, personable, and made every effort to find bears for our viewing. There were other animal sightings but, unfortunately, ours was one of those days when the bears were also social-distancing. A number of passengers were disappointed until the final ten minutes of our tour when, sure enough, four bears appeared on the ice by the formidable Hudson's Bay – distant from us but still impressive and an experience not to forget. The buggy is comfortable although the ride is frequently rough (part of its charm!). A light lunch of good sandwiches/wraps, sides and soft drink/water was served, as well as an in-flight meal going home. Frontiers North is also affiliated with the Assiniboine Park Conservancy in Winnipeg, so a part of the cost is donated to their important programming, as well as support to research in Churchill. Churchill tours are very expensive but, for this tourist, this unique place is worth every cent. TIP: (because of Covid measures, hot beverages were not served so consider bringing your own thermos and snacks, if needed.)

views of the natural landscape

A nice way to spend an afternoon - if you have the right expectations. The summer Tundra Buggy day tours focus mostly on the natural landscapes, birds, animals, and flowers of the tundra. If you are hoping to see plenty of polar bears, the summer tour is probably not for you. Wildlife viewing is mostly about chance and luck - there is no guarantee - but we were lucky and saw two polar bears, an arctic hare, tundra swans, sandhill cranes, loons, snow geese, Canada geese and many other birds. The tundra is beautiful in the summer with all the fireweed and plenty of birds. We had a fairly enjoyable tour, just wish it could have been longer than five hours. It would seem practical to take advantage of the northern summer's early sunrises and late sunsets - mornings and evenings are typically the best times for wildlife viewing - rather than a few hours during the peak of the day.
