Visit once

Arrived before midday as we had rooftop reservation. Souks are as expected. I didn't need anything or want to buy anything in particular. Nice to see once and I do feel it is a must while in Marrakesh. Atmosphere as expected. I was not concerned with hassle, just be rude and ignore if required. I did buy a fridge magnet as I collect them. I chose a store that felt right for me (quiet with space and store owner minding own business) price was already on the magnet stand so no issues at all and no questions asked/asked to buy anything else. Onto the square itself, snake charmers and monkeys in cages. I am not educated on the old traditions but do your own research. Snakes weak with mouths sewn shut/sack removed or fangs cut leads to a slow death. Not a fan of the creatures but I condone animal abuse especially when there is no need for this in the world we live in today . This day and age it should be scrapped. Go enjoy the fantastic rooftop cafes and restaurants but ignore the snake charmers and monkeys. Stay clear and don't take photos of them. UK.

Okay - we ticked the box to say we had done it

Have your wits about you. We did until the last 20 mins of our trip and had found the medina to be safe and just very aware to not get involved with any tourist scams. Until the sun started to drop and we were trying to get our bearings for our evening meal. We were a group of 5 but three of us were together and we were approached by a very charismatic lady who took one of the groups hands and started talking about henna tattoo we were polite but insistent and said no and it looked like she was dropping my friends hand to walk off and then a needle appears out of nowhere and was centimetres from my friends skin. We were quick enough to get her hand away and move ourselves away. But please be careful. We were prepared for a long list of scams etc but this was a new one for us. But we did meet a number of locals who kindly pointed us in the right direction in our visit. Book restaurants in advance for evening meal!

Friends getaway

London, England

Chaotic and fun and not as intimidating as I thought. Bit mad with the bikes and motorbikes at times.

As expected a chaotic market square with lots of entertainment and food and souvenir sellers. Also the refreshing drink sellers with fresh exotic fruits. Not as intimidating as I thought and felt pretty comfortable and safe. Then it’s about braving the labyrinth like streets and alleys with the abundance of sellers offering everything from exotic foods and ingredients to decorative art and carpets, plus the usual souvenirs, clothes and shoes. And more. One downside is many of the walkways allow bikes and motorbikes. This can be a real nightmare as you need to keep your wits about you. Bit of a headache after a while. Still it’s an experience and part of a visit to Marrakesh.

Least favorite place in Marrakech

Largest square in the city but not really worth more than a quick visit. Very chaotic and dirty with lots of people trying to scam you.Did not find the snake charmers or locals with monkeys charming - those monkeys should not be in captivity so found it sad Do not participate in their picture taking schemes for money

Better things to do...

This is an open-air market just outside the Medina. Mostly vegetables, fruits, nuts and dates are sold here, although also some souvenirs. You will also see some snake charmers and some monkeys. I have heard the snakes are fake – I don’t know and didn’t look carefully enough. I saw a monkey kept in a very small cage – which was quite sad. That’s not the life for those poor animals. If you take a picture, I am told they demand money. I did not take any pictures or spend time staring at the snakes or monkeys as I feel it is best not to contribute to that kind of animal abuse. After one of our tours ended on a Saturday night, we were dropped off near the market and had to walk to our Riad. The market was absolutely packed with people – mostly locals, it seemed. All in all, I suppose it is worth walking through – but there are many better things to do in Marrakesh.
