In this four-hour walking tour, you’ll discover some of the different quarters of old Istanbul and gain some fascinating insight into the history and culture of this magical city. You’ll tour ancient fortifications, and sophisticated boulevards and then visit the Mevlevi Sufi Lodge, home to the famous whirling dervishes. A knowledgeable local guide will bring the bustling historic quarters around the Golden Horn and Pera to life with a lively commentary in this unmissable tour. After meeting your guide, the first destination is the Galata Tower. This striking stone fortification with its conical roof has dominated the Istanbul skyline ever since it was built by the Genoese in 1348. Climb 70 meters to the top for some unforgettable views over Istanbul and the Bosphorus. From here we’ll continue with a stroll down one of the city’s most important commercial arteries, Istiklal Avenue This pedestrianized thoroughfare is located in the historic Pera district and is the place where Istanbulites come for their evening stroll. You’ll find exquisite boutiques, music and bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, cafés, pubs, nightclubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolatiers, and restaurants. Our final visit is to the exquisitely preserved Mevlevi Sufi Lodge dating back to 1491. The original monastery was built on a ridge overlooking Galata by Divane Mehmed Dede, Sheikh of Afyon during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II.

About This Experience

Description

Temporarily closed. This historic watchtower, also known as the Galata Kulesi Museum, can be found at the end of Istanbul’s Istiklal shopping street. Today, this museum has exhibition spaces where you can learn about the area's history and admire the iconic architecture of this stone tower. Head up to the observation deck, where you'll be treated to sweeping views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait. It gets busy during sunset though—you can skip the lines with an Istanbul Museum Pass. There are loads of shops and restaurants in the area too—you can explore the tower and the surrounding area on a guided tour of Istanbul.

Galata is a beautiful and lively area with great views, charming streets, and a unique atmosphere. Definitely worth visi

Galata is one of the most charming parts of Istanbul. The streets are full of character, with a mix of historic buildings, cozy cafés, and small boutiques. The area around Galata Tower is always lively, and the view from the top is truly impressive—especially at sunset. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the city’s unique atmosphere.

Iconic eye catching historic tower in north Istanbul

Perhaps more appealing as an Istanbul landmark than one of the many mosques, the former Galata watch tower stands out in the densely populated north part of the city. Though originally built by the Genoese in 1348, the tower took on different functions during the Ottoman era. Nowadays it is a museum. It is 'temporarily' closed for visitors.
