We left today from muscat and put jebel akhdar as destination on google maps. At an certain point the paved road ended. There is no checkpoint. We noticed the sign in the picture but we had a 4x4 , and did not want to return all the way to muscat, so we kept on going. 25 km unpaved road. The beginning was an easy and wide road, you could do it even with a normal car. The last 7 km were really getting hard. Steep, curved and narrow . Of course no side protection. After almost 2,5hours we arrived at our "destinaton".......we wanted to have lunch at the alila hotel and asked for information. Suprise!!!!! We ended up in Bilad Sayd!!!! the famous jebel akhdar is on the other site of the mountainchain. An other 3 hours drive. From Bilad Sayd we decided to continue direct to Niswa, but the hardest part was still to come. Road was even steeper, and in some parts sandy and somewhat slippery. No way you can do it with a normal car . Fortunately there is very little traffic ( the path is very narrow) you will only encounter some tourists, no locals at all. However we loved the trip. Beautiful views of the mountains. So if you are in for some adventure and you are not fainthearted , I can recommend this trip. Only with 4x4! ( By the way, we are not high driving experienced, but we made it anyhow!) Otherwise put on googlemaps Alila hotel!!!

Jaw-dropping views going to Saiq plateau. Saiq itself nothing to write home about, but worth going for the magnificent scenery. Need a 4x4

This is two big plateau at an altitude exceeding 2000m, and they offer much cooler temperatures than the rest of the Oman or UAE. Few hacking trails, very few properly marked trails. You really need wikiloc or another app to hike safely. Wadi hiking is not always enjoyable because of constant scrambling over rocks. But they other options balcony hike or mirage hike and opportunities to discover hidden or deserted villages where life didn't change like in the big cities. Overall it's a nice destination for hiking and tourism.

Phew what a drive. Give yourself plenty of time. This way you can stop at multiple view points and to really appreciate it stop on the way up and down. The police check your drivers licence but seemed more relaxed about checking if the car is genuinely 4WD. The roads are well maintained but not easy driving if you don't like heights.
